Life Skills 101

This program is focused on the high-risk children living on the street or in squalor.  These kids have few positive role models or adults in their lives.  Most aren’t living as part of a family.  They haven’t been to school in years.  They work everyday scavenging for garbage to sell.  They live in extreme poverty.  They carry the responsibility of adults while they are still children.   Left on their own, most will get lost in a life of crime.  We hope to re-direct their story.

Kids at a Work is aimed at getting inside these kids’ world, getting dirty, getting involved.  Formally, it is a rehabilitation program that builds mentoring relationships with these kids, helps them develop socially, supports them in the community, and provides them with basic education and life necessities.  Informally, we want to build into these kids in whatever way we can and be there for them when they would otherwise be alone. They go through a process of reorienting to scheduled daily activities and learning to follow instruction.  They engage their minds by participating in basic artistic and academic activities.  They learn discipline through sport.  In time, they develop the life skills needed to complete a technical training program and have a chance of finding and keeping a job.

There are kids like this all over the world.  Many people ask us why these ones?  The answer: Because we have the opportunity to help THESE ones.
